UK Vogue September 2020 : The Faces of Hope

thank you Ben!
Binx and Sage Elsesser are such sweet real-life couple for quite longtime now, i am surprised that not any title shot them together back to this lockdown distance zoom and facetime-provided issues fever... we had tons of colls/agoston, various models on various vogue covers shot by their boyfriend etc.

So many of the same looks in "The Roaring 20s" editorial with Edie Campbell were also shot on Vittoria Ceretti for the August issue of Vogue Paris. Although I prefer the styling and overall mood of Vittoria's editorial, I must admit the shot of Edie in the Paco Rabanne look is superb.

Wow, Vanity Fair Italia looks good this month.

It’s nice to see Claudia again here. They probably could have done more here but still, nice to see her.

Overall it looks like a semi-descent September issue when all things are considered but I still feel like no magazine has been able to really unleash their creativity to deliver an exciting, interesting issue that makes the best of the conversation. I feel like there are so many exciting concepts they could have explored for their editorials in these circumstances yet we get editorials that essentially could have appeared anytime.

.... yet we get editorials that essentially could have appeared anytime.

That's pretty much how I sum up this issue. Yes, it's solid, but for an issue that's supposed to set the tone for a new season, it's not very exciting. I've always complained that Alexandra's Vogue looked too dour and monotonous, this could easily have been hers. The styling, the colours, the setting and even the expressions. It all feels so beige. Except for Claudia's editorial. I may have groaned when I read that it was shot by Matthew (I still think January Jones when I read his name), but it's actually my favourite in the issue. That shot of her at the pool table is perfection.

The mix of commerce and social talking points in this issue, and I'm talking layout, is bothersome and need sorting. It's firstly far too heavy on products everywhere (feels like I'm reading an issue of Vogue Japan!), and secondly, the pacing and order of the articles should just be shuffled. 'How to Fix Fashion' is actually a decent read but it got shifted right at the back of the magazine instead of right next to the Designers at Home piece?

If I wanted Newsweek/Time/The New Yorker—I would have gone for Newsweek/Time/The New Yorker, not Vogue.

Biggest disappointment still is that I adore the covershot and its layout, and was hoping for an extensive, cinematic fashion story that referenced and resonated with such a provocative/controversial movement of an era as The Black Panther. And nothing LOL What semblance of any fashion story looks like a blatant afterthought: Claudia’s is decent enough but hardly memorable and absolutely forgettable for a September issue story. (Nice to see a Korean face as one of the few fashions stories, but again-- utterly forgettable story that looks like the brand of shoots ELLE France churns out weekly.)

You know, all the ads at the front are so desktop-publisher level of cheapnesss in production, I felt as if I were going through the first rags I worked on in 2009— where that sort of DIY was the only option since the local indie brands didn’t have a budget. And I had to remind myself that this is one of the highest profiled Vogues and these cheap-looking ads are from the highest profiled brands on this Earth…. Just creatively void and pathetic. This issue is one of the dullest, if not the dullest Vogue ever offered for a September. It’s not Vogue-- it’s a Newsweek/Time/The New Yorker wannabe, with some generic, bland lifestyle supplement fashions stories from a mid-range department-store thrown in.

The commoners will eat all this up.

I'm actually interested to know what the Brits think of this. Not the British general public, but British forum members.

I feel that Alexandra's Vogue never looked too far outside of London, and nor does Edward's, each for their own reasons, but only one is selling itself as 'representative'.

A portfolio of landscape shots stuck on the front of the magazine during the months when nothing much is happening in fashion ...isn't much. It's using someone's holiday snaps to fill a gap, rather than showing an actual interest in those areas.

All things considered it's not a bad September issue. I bet we'll see a lot worse. I thought Edie's edit by McLOLlan would be awful, surprisingly it's quite alright, I like the shot of her in Givenchy (that hat looks like an exact copy of one from Stefano's YSL F/W 2010 outing exactly a decade ago) by the pool. Tyler Mitchell on the other hand can do a lot better ( @ the Aphex Twin reference above, on point!)

But honestly, I haven't really liked any of Edward's September issues, even pre Covid. His issues for March are always better for some reason, this was the same thing with W during his time as Fashion Director there.

These editorials all look the same..Can't quite put my finger on it.

I want to like Nadine's ed but Serena's face isn't very appealing in this spread. She looks bored.

Serena is awful as usual. Binx is alright but nothing inspiring. Edie's is more my jam but not really astounding.

This level of laziness for a September issue...is what I've come to expect from him. Sad, because at W he did turn out nice work but pandering political commentary is the trend while good fashion imagery is not.

Excellent article on ethical jewellery.
Thanks, Benn.

It’s a good issue...
It’s very cohesive/inoffensive. There are some nice surprises (Claudia) even if there’s a lack of real impactful pics.
I miss that one photo that I would love to frame!

It looks like standing there, doing nothing and looking fabulous is a rule in Binx’s household. Lol

Claudia’s story is good because there’s a touch of seduction but it’s not enough. Too tame! I don’t necessarly want VP « orgasmic poses » but something more...

The designer feature is fine. It will be interesting to see if everything stated in this issue will have a reality on the runway.

The portfolio of activist looks like what it is supposed to look.

Good, decent issue that does not feel special enough tho.

Claudia’s editorial is my favourite, she looks stunning and I wish there were more pictures with more looks. Matthew did a pretty good job!
I got the magazine exclusively for this editorial so I’ll thank Edward for that.

The cover looks better in ‘real life’ and it does reminisce some of that Black Panthers energy but it would be 100 times better if the rest of the fold out wasn’t just those photo-booth-tube-station portraits. why not all standing with the same commanding pose as seen on the main page?
