The Interior Decor Thread! #2

Here are a couple bathroom images that came to mind when you described your project...
I know these are different from the space you're working with, but just an idea/inspiration color-wise

I'm setting up my new office and finally decided on the color palette and general fell of the room, really bright and with white accents. These are the pictures I had for inspiration:

But the main thing for me right now is to find the perfect office chair....I want it to be stylish but comfy. And don't even know where to look for it, all chairs I've come across are black and huge and ugly.

^ Funny you should post this ... my office chair is hot pink Sensuede  I was determined not to have an ugly office chair ... there are so many hideous ones to choose from  It's a Humanscale Freedom chair, uphostered in Flamingo Sensuede (which is eco Ultrasuede).

The metal finish, I forget what it's called, is kinda pearlized office grey.

My desk is blonde maple with metal legs, and I have blonde maple and white 'brocade' (pierced) metal office accessories. Floor lamps and chandelier and desk lamp are chrome, a mix of Deco and modern. I also have a vintage European school desk (for two), wood with metal legs, that I use like a credenza. The room is painted cream and white ... so the chair is a focal point. I saw a hot pink wall clock that I've been meaning to order. I also have black and white file folders in various patterns that are similar to the brocade accessories. These are in an open chrome stand.

^ the floor and walls are a dream .. so thick... and that dining room.

The lack of windows would probably kill me though.. unless the weather is really bad most of the year.

So glad you revived this thread and that you're slowly coming back :heart:

For the sake of contributing something, I saw David Bowie's house from the 90s or 80s some weeks ago and now I can't stop thinking about a shiny black wall. All white everything always bothered me about my last apartment, little did I know.. a black wall would've fixed it all!

yes, if there were more windows in some of the rooms to let in all that amazing natural light, it would be literally perfect!

i think it's been all this being at home lately that's gotten me back into interior design. i think most of my pins have been of home architecture and decor.

i personally love white interiors, because it not only gives the illusion of more space, but i love the way it looks with crisp white drapes and bedding, green plants and heavy wooden floors (hence why i love this space!).

^ I'm the same but the outdoors version, having spent most of the pandemic in a garden (sun spots, cracked heels, mosquito bites but no bikini lines? got it all!). The result: I have now saved about a hundred pictures of hardscaping ideas, some landscaping, have learned the hard way what concrete polishing gone great looks like and what a nightmare it is when it goes so wrong!

I love white interiors too, don't get me wrong. I had wood flooring in my last apartment, which compensated things a bit, it was just so white.. like the pipes were white, the kitchen was white, my bathtub was white, the ceiling was white (which is probably what bothered me the most).. visitors loved it cause of the accents I added but I think I just saw so much of it and so many lovely things I could have instead (grass is greener syndrome? lol) that I became obsessed with dark blue kitchens, deep-colored tiles, super rich, emerald-colored bedding. I think my problem isn't really that it's white but the freakin' texture.. the white walls in your post are smooth, I LOVE brick too.. mine was stucco, which will be my cause of death.

THIS IS A DREAM.

I've been obsessed with white interiors lately (and adding a splash of wood) I've been obsessed with this bedroom collection for a while now (I linked it in case anyone wants to check it out) but just have been indecisive cause changing one piece of furniture would lead to changing the whole vibe. Currently, my setup is a mess cause I've been buying random stuff I don't need. But if I would be given the chance, I'll have something similar to this.

I've recently discovered that the only houseplants I can keep alive are peppers. I started them in October 2020, from seed, in the hopes of yielding a few peppers. They never produced any, but they grew kind of massive and wild and now I don't want to get rid of them. Anyone have any luck with particular houseplants?

^ Philodendren  I also grow orchids, but they don't always survive for long past the flowering. I did have a couple grow new leaves recently. My green thumb is mostly operational outside, where I can get an assist from Mother Nature.

Thought I'd share a cute coffee spot I visited in Glasgow last week. I was in England for work and thought I'd hit up a couple of spots because I LOVE COFFEE!!!

I think it's called BAM. And I am in love with their mid-century/90s vibe. It has got to be the most nostalgic spot I've been to.

Not sure how long it has been in that spot but I admire the vibe and furniture choice. It's like I'm in a Friends set. Their mid-century furniture is just so elegant and their outside patio downstairs has great outdoor pieces too. It doesn't have any extra bells or whistles, which makes it not go out of style.

Plus, the lines are clean and modern. Here are some of the photos that will def urge you to visit.

I'm wondering if people here who don't use any kind of professional assistance for their home's decor/furnishings make a calculated plan or just kind of wing it. I've always winged it and I do have quite a few little things I love. Recently as I'm preparing to, for the first time, furnish a new space from the ground up, I'm wondering if I should take a different approach. Of course I wish I had a 1stDibs budget, but I'm operating at more of a Crate & Barrel level right now so I feel I've got to be intentional. I have to make sure I'm choosing things I know I'll love for years to come. Seeing all the older scans from past AD issues in the celebrity homes thread helps give me ideas on the kind of things (furnishings and even colors) I find timeless, which is helpful. Finally chose a new dining room table last night and ordered it, and I'm so excited. A massive (104" x 48" in this case) table is something I always wanted but have never had space for. I'll be living in the 'burbs so I've got to fill a space over 4x the size of my current space and it's daunting but I'm also loving the process. I created a pinterest board and just am posting everything I've been buying as well as photos of my current things I want to keep, my art, etc. and I'm finding it's *extremely* helpful to see everything together. I mean, pretty obvious, right? But now I'm feeling half of what interior designers do, at least in terms of the conceptual phase, is a scam for anyone with their own opinions and time to focus on it. It's so fun (and free lol) to do it yourself.

I am having the same type of awakening experience driven by that AD thread lol. It really is exciting. I'm usually one wing it too but now I'm starting to vaguely understand the larger picture of what type of space I want to live in and how I want to feel etc. It's really fun but I can get extremely overwhelmed and lost when working with the details, i.e. the "things" I like and how to incorporate them in or edit them out. Scared to pick something new out because wait what if it doesn't work? Which color of xyz item should I get?? I'm not rich I don't wanna waste money lol. That's something I always struggle with in art in general is being too free and needing to work on drawing boundaries and building parameters to work within and becoming more focused. I think this process takes a lot of discipline, practice, and trial and error. Just keep coming up with ideas, stop, breathe, look back, assess, and edit. Once you do it enough times you can kind of see a trend of where things are going and play with that too

How exciting furnishing your new place....congrats!!!
I was very fortunate to have one of my best friends, who was a professional interior designer, help me with my place. I am not one of those gays with the decor gene, sadly. I'm much better than I used to be, but I'm not great. But I really do enjoy rearranging and changing things out. And trust, if I could, I'd be all about 1st Dibs!
I find placement of the furniture the hardest part, but once that's all in place, the furnishings come into place. I collect art so that usually is the biggest challenge for me....small cottage home with too many windows, but I keep buying art! lol
Keep us all posted on your progress!!

This sounds exciting!

I don't have much advice to give, I got a new big place in the city last year and haven't succeeded in much. I felt sooo lucky but was also very busy and extremely indecisive so months later, it's mostly empty and I'm not even there (may go back in a few days). I think I'm way too picky to have an interior designer (yes for my future house but.. not for an apartment that I don't even own, in a city where I clearly don't even want to be in and will find any excuse to run away from :inclouds:) but, I did realise, from previous experiences, that I will only drive myself mad if I keep expecting to come up with a full picture of what I want in space.. I do have a ton of ideas of what I want and what I don't want but I think it's easier to start with pieces that you really love and taking it from there.. I'm sure that, for instance, if I found the right table like you did, it would automatically unlock ideas for exactly how I want the dining room to look like. There's also nothing more excruciating than having an idea of a specific fabric/object/color and thinking you can find it, not even knowing if it actually exists. :confounded:

^ Agree 100% on starting with something you love (and really, adding to that more things you love). Everyone says the things you love work together, and I've found that to be true.

So far I've done everything myself, KOV ... and for my bedroom, I kind of had a plan. I have a mix of new pine/maple furniture I've bought (mostly when I was younger--now I buy new only upholstery, beds, recliners, office furniture), vintage Art Moderne birdseye maple, a vintage painted + oak piece, and a couple other painted things. What I thought was a little risky is I wanted to use some red in my color scheme and almost no one does that in bedrooms. I did it & it worked perfectly, I love it. So you're right, when you're not a professional, it's time consuming and a little scary and slow, but so rewarding.

Btw, I have bought a number of items from 1stDibs (maybe a dozen or so?), I just do one or two at a time. They do have some relatively affordable things. I like Quatrine for upholstery, Thos Moser for new wood pieces (I've ordered a standing desk that's going to be finished this summer, that's not a vintage item!), I've bought from eBay before (including tables, the birdseye maple set, light fixtures), 1stDibs for statement vintage/antique pieces, and I've also gotten a number of affordable pieces from local antique malls--one dealer in particular who had booths at different malls I bought several pieces from.

Empty space is beautiful ... I think I still have less furniture in my living room than the previous owners had, and I think it's full.

I think I'm about to use a professional designer for the first time, for my bathroom. I have water damage and it's going to have to be gutted, so we can't futz around, and everything really needs to work. I'll know for sure tomorrow whether this problem originated with hail damaging the ridge of my roof, but of course the whole room needs to be designed to properly withstand normal levels of moisture. I'm excited about it because there are elements of this room I really dislike and now I'm being forcibly handed an opportunity to change them.

1stdibs

It's exactly a dozen things I've gotten from 1stDibs over a number of years, and the first pieces I bought were for my home office. What I learned from looking at this history awhile back is that I really love furniture with curvy lines. I bought the first pieces in 2008-2009 and the most recent last year.
