US Harper’s Bazaar February 2021 : Awkwafina by Ryan McGinley

How is this a cover image? Like what is that styling, the creative direction and concept? I get what they were trying to do with the composition but it flopped hard. And I've never really been a fan of McGinley's overrated work, but this looks like his images on antidepressants.

Samira has had some interesting ideas so far, but nothing that's been pulled off well and fully realised.

Mcginleys work has really gone down the toilet as of late. Also why not hire an Asian photographer to shoot her? Black talent get black photographers (which I think is great) but why not the same for Asian talent. I think it would be great to diversify in more than one way.

All sorts of awful, and at this rate I am officially frightened for the future of American Harper's Bazaar under Samira Nasr. A number of months in, and Nasr is yet to break new ground. What's the hold up?

That would be truly awful. It’s bad enough that Black creatives are enabled and encouraged to self-segregating (and to such poor, amateur results might I add). Creatives need to be encouraged and inspired to work together without restrictions when it comes to the creative realm: We’re all in this together. And this Black working with only/mostly Black; Asian working with only/mostly Asian; Latin working with only/mostly Latin etc is so counterproductive and goes against everything fashion— and we’re talking about high fashion here, not government services where it makes practical sense to match the same culture/nationality/race for socio-political understanding and assimilation Fashion is not the UN. And that’s why fashion is so weak these days: It’s taken over by people that were working at the DMV and social services office. What’s next: Only Black models/stars can wear Black designers???

As for this covershot… the only positive aspect about this is that it’s nice to see an American rag finally give an Asian a cover. (…Couldn’t we get an Asian model instead…??? I know I know— beggars can’t be choosers. But still…)

Yes, I am heartened that in one month alone, we've seen more Asian stars on the front of western fashion magazines than we usually get to see in one year. Or in one decade, in the case of most editions.

At least this one's better than her Vogue AU cover. I kinda like it.

What did Awkwafina do to get such dirty treatment from fashion magazines? From a dreadful Vogue Australia cover to a slightly less but still awful Bazaar cover.. she deserves better.

Why so sad expression?...it looks ok

I understand why the cover photo falls a little flat but can I just say how wonderful it is to see a return to more sophisticated coverlines? Instead of a barrage of word vomit that characterized the Glenda Bailey era, the design now is pleasing and even calming. I actually want to read the magazine now.

@iriswills Agreed! Much less blown out, in your face glam. A nice change of pace.

Is it my dream HB? Definitely not but there's a laid-back sophistication to the cover image with a subtle (beanie) nod to Tilberis era Bazaar which I appreciate.

What’s Ryan’s obsession with making it look like she has no arms?

Awkwafina’s ed is terrible! does she suffer from the Alicia Vikander Syndrome (great in motion film but terrible in pictures?)

do love the mood and shots of Shape-Shifting (very US Vogue when it was good, no?)

New Season New Clothes is also good.

Great Ed! Quinn looks like she could be a model from the late 90's/ early 00's!
