Meet Thom Browne Model and Behind-the-Scenes Photographer, Larissa Hofmann
Larissa Hofmann’s Instagram @larryhofmann is satisfyingly beautiful. It’s a clean feed, dotted with Picasso paintings and the occasional selfie showing off the German model’s dagger-cut cheekbones and large blue eyes. And yet, Hofmann isn’t simply another digital personality with a vaguely artsy social media presence: She recently worked with Thom Browne to photograph behind-the-scenes images of the label’s campaign and the CFDA Fashion Awards. Hofmann, who has a polished tomboy sensibility, has always had a bit of a connection with the menswear label. “It’s always been suits for me, never a glittery dress,” explains Hofmann. “When [Browne] asked me to go to the CFDA Awards, I was like, ‘This is a dream. I’d like to go in a suit. I like it on other women too.‘ ” Hofmann captured the scene, as well as fellow models Grace Bol and Sarah Abney, in the label’s preppy, nattily tailored pieces.
Hofmann made a bit of a splash on the runway in 2014 while walking for big name labels such as Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier in Paris. She was first discovered by an organizer of Berlin Fashion Week who asked her to walk in a show. “She said I could get 250 euros to walk a show. I was an art student at the time, so I thought that was a lot of money.” An agent from Viva Model Management spotted Hofmann and sent her to Paris for three weeks, which later turned into four months.
Though Hofmann has been successful in the fashion industry—she has become a fixture in publications such as 032c—her interests have always been with art. She grew up in a small Bavarian town of roughly 2,000 people and used drawing and painting as an outlet. “Even as a teenager, I always had an urge to leave that town. Usually you study and then you get your husband and then you get your family,” she says. “It is a very conservative thing.” Eventually, she received a scholarship to attend Lothar-von-Faber-Schule for art in Nürnberg, Germany, which she graduated at 19 and later entered the Weißensee School of Art in Berlin to study art history and traditional painting. (It was only a few weeks later, after enrolling, that Hofmann left school for Paris.)
Despite taking a break from her studies, she believes that the time away has helped cultivate her skill set. In addition to working with Thom Browne, Hofmann has gone on to exhibit her art with fellow model Zen Sevastyanova. (She specializes in coffee illustrations, too. “I look at each spill and depending on what I see, I start drawing thin black lines on it, explains Hofmann.”) When posed with the question of whether or not she will return to university, Hofmann seems to be relying on real-life experience more than the classroom to expand her knowledge. “Sometimes, I think about going back to my studies, although I feel like I learn so much while working and doing everything on my own,” she says. “When I take pictures, it’s more about instinct and gut feeling.
