Having sharpened her scissors at Azzedine Alaïa and Jean Paul Gaultier, it’s no wonder that Sophie Theallet can cut a fabulous dress, be it of the crisp shirt or ruffled gypsy variety. “Colors, freedom and happiness” is how she characterized her lineup backstage, and indeed it was the way she worked her rich palette — from pastels to jewel tones — that made this debut collection exciting. Inspired by traditional garb from North Africa and her native Southern France, she used the same light, charming touch in her more tailored looks — a cotton shirtdress decorated above the hem with luxe satin ribbons, for example — that she did in those ethereal chiffon peasant frocks. And dresses with black chiffon overlays created intrigue, while keeping the mood, well, happy.
