Farewell to Steve Hiett

BY FRANCESCA MARANI AUGUST 29, 2019
Farewell to the famous fashion photographer Steve Hiett

The photographer Steve Hiett (1940) has disappeared , one of the most prolific and significant voices of fashion photography, a pioneer of an unmistakable style that made him famous all over the world and among the most prestigious names in Vogue Italia .

Admirers greet him by publishing a heart under the last photo posted on Instagram, April 27 this year, a hospital room in dim light. For a more vivid memory, just open his website and you will be greeted immediately by the portrait of his face, illuminated by a smile.

For over five decades, Steve Hiett has been able to tell the story of fashion through the creation of Polaroid photographs, videos, screen prints and collages. His images are characterized by the innovative use of the external flash that intensifies the colors of the Kodachrome film, making them saturated and intense. Art and graphic design, the author of studies on the Brighton School of Art and then the Royal College of Art. His imagery is composed of fragmented stories, film stills that take place in suburban spaces. The protagonists are mysterious and fascinating women, caught in motion or absorbed in some action, framed by displaced angles. Their figures stand out sharply on the scene, surrounded by cobalt blue skies.

There is a certain rhythm in his photos, a reflection of his great passion for music, which he is a leading man to become a front man of the "Pyramid" group. The photograph of the rest of the city, like the best meetings, when I think about it. Sixties and a long way to shoot for fashion magazines like Nova , Marie Claire and, starting from the Nineties, Vogue Italia . It is really a meeting with the historical director Franca Sozzani to revitalize her career, as her words reveal: "I was back on a plane to France doing Italian Vogue ".

We celebrate it with a gallery of his best shots published on the pages of Vogue Italia.
