…So that’s where the infamous Meisel portrait is from-- and shot by Herb, to boot! Herb remained untouchable when it came to his B&W portraits; he really was a painter at heart. The one of Neneh is also golden. Wished all these portraits had their single layout instead of thumbnails.

The Meisel portrait is by Annie Leibovitz. This Gap ad is a celebration of previous campaigns photographed by Leibovitz and Ritts. And I agree, they're all magnificent portraits!

No brand, not even the most exclusive and artisanal these days, would ever sign off on such strong portraits. I assume the Neneh one was by Annie as well… The Miles Davis by Annie and Dizzy Glilespie by Herb portraits are my all-time fav: Just sheer force of personality. And this was GAP…. God, visuals are so embarrassingly basic these days.
