About Your Portfolio, for Applying to Fashion School and After Graduation

I get all my portofolio files, notedbooks and equipment from Muji, because its all nice n' plain. They do A3 portfolio books that have white transclucent plastic covers. Some of my clients commented on these and one client even asked me to buy some for her - so I must be doing something right.

The price is really low too - which does help a lot! :D :D

congrats cowboyboots on your first interview...and I hope you get the one you want most.

I am currently re-building the portfolio I originally prepared. Its 14x11, but now I am kinda thinking I'd like to have something smaller. I've got five different sections that include my designs, flats, mood, swatches, as well as my cad designs. Its all womens wear. But now I am realising I want to make a section of mens wear designs.

Anyone have any luck with mixing mens and womens in your portfolio?

i had no idea how to form a portfolio but first things first started out by ordering a decent folio case. the size of this case depends on what size you would be comfortable with but i would recommend anything of size A3 and above. pick a size best for you as it may feel daunting to tackle a size A1 folio.

presentation is all to do with your style of work and what pleases your eye. but a tip i could give is dont make it too cluttered as this may distract from the things you put into your portfolio give each item the space it needs.

and as for the contents this will depend on what you are applying for alhtough showing a range of skills is good. and if you apply to different schools they may want different things from your portfolio. this also depends upon the course you have applied for.

such as i have recived a letter for an interview next week which has specified that i should not take any garments to the interview. so instead of this i have decided to take pictures of them instead. also be prepared that they may give you a theme to work you portfolio around and may ask you to produce something from that theme.

i would take pictures of mine but i need to charge my camera battery i may post some later when i get around to it.

hope all that waffling on has helped you:flower:

Sorry, I only now seeing your question...14x11 size is actually 14-inches x 11-inches. Its a manageable size for fashion portfolios.

some snap shots of my folio but im gonna change it before my interview needs up dating.

hope that gives you some ideas:flower:

My portfolio is a sort of carry case where i have finished pieces and photographs of my garments mounted onto boards (A1 size) also i have lifedrawings and sketchbooks in there (thats what the uni wanted) i suppose its good to put sketchbooks in there so they can see how you work, your thought process and stuff also i have a small sketchbook that i use as my fabric library (this shows my sensitivity to fabrics and other materials)

can i just ask.......why does everyone do their portfolio's so god damm big
i do my sketch books on A5 and collections in A4.... i find it much easier to go through and more concise

yet every art student is still anal about having the biggest folio somehow

I spose its to everyones different tastes i find it easier to get a feel of my work quicker with it being on larger boards and stuff + thats what my tutors advised others find it easier to work at a smaller scale, though i do wish i had a smaller folio its too big !!

I chnged to a 11x14 portfolio. I find that I can have larger images and show much more detailing in my specs... stitching, measurements.. they all get lost on 8x11.

I'll take pics of mine soon and show it off a little

The reason I've got an A1 folder acid, is because of doing art, I have a fair bit few A1 sheets aswell as many smaller sheets and sketchbooks, getting an A1 folder just means I can fit all the different paper sizes when it's needed. I will go on to get smaller folio cases when I do more work of a certain size, I didn't think of it like 'i need the biggest coz its the best'

God just think how easy interviews would be, take in an A1 folder with no work in 'right your in' i wish :ninja:

i totally agree with fab on the size front. plus i love working big i mess about with photography so love agranging similar photos one one page instead of flicking through a book of them. although i do agree the size is annoying although it does allow me to display larger pieces of work if i so wish. but they all seem to be on the school wall! i work on A3 size for my fashion though.

plus i get like to look like an anal art student carrying that thing around:lol:

Exactly. You have to put those details high on the list of priorities. A few months ago, I was planning to re-do everything smaller -- to 8x11, but as Luna says that does make details harder to review, also I think the overall impact of the illustrations in a 11x14 is greater. I think I am going to shrink things down just a bit so I have more flexibility with 8x11, but the 11x14 is more advantageous, for fashion folios anyway.

Nah, I've applied to Northumbria/Huddersfield/Central Lancs, but I only want to go to Northumbria  You got your first interview yet? ^

i have 2 weeks go to and im cacking myself!
i keep having nightmares that everyone elses work will make mine look laughable
