John Galliano’s Spring/Summer 1992 show, titled "Napoleon and Josephine", took place at London Fashion Week. An ode to the first Empress of the French and inspired by the 1991 move of his team to Paris, the collection drew on romantic nineteenth-century fashions beloved of Galliano, such as lingerie-inspired slips and dresses, embroidered frock coats, feathered and tulle hats, and diaphanous gowns. Opening with a procession of sheer bias-cut gowns draped over the model’s bodies and revealing white underwear, the image of a pure heroine was presented, before being wrapped in frock coats and dominatrix suiting. Galliano’s version of a wedding dress appeared, closely followed by wedding night lingerie, all silks and satins and feathers, after which a mourning period was marked by sombre slashed black dresses. Oversized picture hats contrasted ringlets, heels, and scant clothing to mark the drama and seductiveness of the French court.
