Porter #19 Spring 2017 : Natalia Vodianova by Cass Bird

It's quite ironic though how they put their cover star in a corset in an issue celebrating "superwomen"...

It seems the stylist was being deliberately ironic, although in an insufferable hipster kind of way. In fact, just last season I read a review along the lines of 'Miuccia reclaimed the corset, the modern woman wears it on her terms etc'. So yeah, nowadays it's seen as an abstract allusion to the enforced femininity of yesteryear. Confusing, I know!

I hate it when covers have to write "superwoman" or anything related to feminism on their covers. I love feminist issues, BUT, I love it even more when the image speaks for itself. I like it when the model exudes power, control, courage and all without the need to add "superwoman" in there. That there is an effective cover, when at first glance, people will immediately realize that the issue is all about the super women of today. This to me looks like a bored Natalia who doesn't even to want to be on the cover.

Great theme (very timely), odd execution.

100% agree. It does make me queasy though when fashion commodifies feminism.

In this day and age feminism stands for absolutely nothing, very much like current fashion. The way I see it's a perfect pairing...

The tee is a limited piece designed with Chloe for sale through Net-A-Porter.

I'm happy to see a model after the last two celebrity covers and I like the simpleness of the cover, but Natalia always seems to be given the 'superwoman' association these days. It becomes boring - she's a versatile model who has managed to have a long, successful career against the odds, why not let her show her range? It feels a bit lazy, in the same way Edita's cover by Bruce Weber did. That being said, Edita's editorial was stunning. I hope the content makes up for the cover.

#2 "Tangier Days" Vanessa Axente by Vincent van de Wijngaard
#3 "Call To Arms" Hana J by Camilla Akrans
#4 "We are family" Delevingne sisters by Bjorn Iooss
#5 " and feather canyons everywhere" Kiki Willems by Drew Jarrett
#6"Fatal Attraction" Ellen Rosa by Chris Colls
#7"The beauty memo" Julia Van Os by Emma Tempest
#8 "Power Stripes" Damaris Goddrie by Philip Messmann
#9"The New Suit" Arizona Muse by Marcus Ohlsson

I found some preview pics.
I liked the cover, but a little bit disappointed about the editorial, it's a little bit powerless and dark.
Also not very impressed with the Delevingne photos.
What happened with the sunny and colorful photos and beautiful sceneries? :ermm:

Way too dark for spring! Thanks for the previews Anna147.

Can we get a smile in an edit?! So dark and gloomy this whole entire issue.

Yikes, it seems the moody cover vibe was expanded throughout the edits posted so far. You wouldn't say this is a spring issue! But I'm more annoyed by the blatant copycat shenanigans going on here. Camilla's shoot looks like a feeble Glen Luchford attempt, and I seriously thought the cover edit was shot by Harley Weir. And these are the images which should correlate with the 'superwoman' theme? Please! I think Natalia being an Arnault woman may have been more of an inspiration than her much touted endavours.

Vincent's story with Vanessa Axente is the only one which intrigued me! Every shot is so beautifully captured and cinematic. The one of her ascending up the stairway being a personal favourite!

Vincent's story with Vanessa Axente is the only one which intrigued me! Every shot is so beautifully captured and cinematic. The one of her ascending up the stairway being a personal favourite!
It's even better in print.. Vincent keeps writing love letters to Morocco, his best work is there and it's always full of narrative and romance, he could very easily turn all of these ideas into a short film..

The story with Kiki is also a standout imo.. I still remember seeing her for the first time in one of these Saint Laurent shows and she looked so unpleasant.. she's come a long way since then and seems one of the most versatile in her field right now, she just shines here (literally lol).

I actually enjoyed Camilla's story, I've never that drawn to her work and it's been a while it's grabbed my attention but this seems like the stories she used to do for Numero (I think) around 2008, not trying to push the envelope to keep up with trends, just beautiful lighting and silhouettes. I also may be biased but these DTLA scenes, the one from above and the one with some vitrine effect.. they perfectly capture some of the calmness and eccentricity you find walking there very early in the morning, and the styling feels like a lovely tribute to the decadence of Broadway (the architecture, the hideous stores, abandoned theaters, broken signs that promised big spectacles).

I would've bought this if the only copy available hadn't been so damaged..and I don't really buy magazines. I'm surprised such a strong Spring issue came from Porter...

I actually like some photos in Natalia's story, but my absolute fave from this issue is Vanessa's.

A lot of lovely imagery in this issue, but the sombre feeling puts me off from purchasing. It feels like it exactly matches the moment - and there's something to be said for keeping in step with the mood of the season you're currently in - but it also brings me down a little, when I want something that makes me dream of brighter days ahead.
