Maria Grazia Chiuri has been confirmed as the new artistic director at Christian Dior, replacing Raf Simons who departed the label in October 2015. Chiuri, who is Dior's first female artistic director, previously headed up the womenswear collections at Valentino alongside her co-designer Pierpaolo Piccioli since 2008.

Chiuri is to start next week as artistic director of women's haute couture, ready-to-wear and accessory collections with her first show slated for September 30.

"It is a great honour to be joining the house of Dior," said Chiuri in a statement. "I measure the tremendous responsibility of being the first woman in charge of the creation in a house so deeply rooted in the pure expression of femininity. The endless wealth of its heritage continues to be a constant source of inspiration for fashion, and I cannot wait to express my own vision."

Piccioli - with whom Chiuri has enjoyed a creative partnership with for over two decades since meeting in the late Eighties and studying at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome together - will remain at Valentino, where he will take the sole reins as creative director.

"Her vision of women, both sensual and poetic, resonates with that of Monsieur Dior. Today's news brings to an end the rumour mill surrounding the post, which hasn't abated since Simons's unexpected deaprture after three years in the role. Among those previously associated with the role was Alexander McQueen creative director, Sarah Burton.

Dior Couture chief executive Sidney Toledano speaks to BoF on why Maria Grazia Chiuri was the best choice to align the house with ‘the needs of the women of today and tomorrow — globally.’

PARIS, France — When Sidney Toledano first met Maria Grazia Chiuri, he knew she was the right woman to take over the helm at Christian Dior as artistic director and lead the French fashion house into a new era.

“She’s very straightforward and a direct person and so, frankly, the first time I met her, I knew that she was the one,” the chief executive of Dior told BoF in an interview before the official announcement on Friday morning, noting Chiuri’s previous experience at Valentino and Fendi, as well as her clear vision of who the Dior woman was.

"We were talking about the vision of the woman of today, of tomorrow, of the young generation. The woman in different occasions — when she works, when she is shopping, when she is going for a cocktail or dinner. She has a global experience and big intuition, at the same time she is really pragmatic and the way she talks about it, it is very clear," Toledano said.

The appointment of Chiuri was announced early on Friday, finally ending months of speculation over who would take the creative helm of the brand after the sudden departure of Raf Simons last year. Valentino officially confirmed the departure of Chiuri on Thursday, appointing Pierpaolo Piccioli the brand's sole creative director.

Chiuri joins Dior at a difficult time for the luxury sector. In the first quarter of 2016, ending March 31, the brand’s fashion division reported a 1 percent drop in reported sales, hit by a drop in tourist flows to Paris and several major Asian markets. Dior generates around €5 billion in annual sales (around $5.53 billion), of which more than three-fifths comes from perfume and cosmetics. LVMH chairman and chief executive Bernard Arnault has said he expected to achieve a similar figure in 2016.

The designer will be responsible for women’s haute couture, ready-to-wear and accessory collections and will present her first ready-to-wear collection for the brand on September 30.

“Maria Grazia Chiuri’s talent is enormous and internationally acclaimed,” Arnault said in a statement. “She will bring her elegant and modern vision of the Dior woman, seamlessly attuned to the heritage and the codes defined by Monsieur Dior.”

Chiuri’s appointment is a significant move for the French fashion house, as she will become the first woman in its history to hold the artistic director title.

“To dress a woman is more important than ever today. The evolution of women is a special evolution and her vision and how she wants to transform it is really interesting,” Toledano said. "Because she’s a woman and she has a different perspective on what she is going to do and it played an important part. I was looking for somebody that was deeply understanding the needs of a woman of today and tomorrow globally."

Toledano added that Chiuri's “hands-on experience” of designing accessories will also be important in the next chapter of Dior, a subject close to his heart. He played an instrumental role in launching the Lady Dior bag, now one of the house's best-selling icons.

“She has knowledge and understanding and for the accessories I have somebody now that has direct experience with the bags and shoes and this is really important. This is what we want to give to Dior, and so she will be very involved in that,” he continued.

But customers should not expect the same Dior, he said. “It will be different. We have our codes, absolutely, and we have our values about the excellence, the savoir-faire, the silhouette. But Dior is also a house where you have to take l’air du temps and project it for the future.”

“I think she will translate it with her own eyes, in a different way and the fact that she is woman, we expect this translation in the coming collections. It’s not a constant look and she will have to put her own way to [how to] do it. The codes of Dior, they exist but they are not so [strict], you can play with them. This is something that Raf did and John [Galliano] did before, so there are some codes, but we expect her to bring something into the evolution of the brand," Toledano said.

Looking forward, Toledano said he felt proud and was excited to introduce Chiuri to the company and its teams.

“I’m really happy myself to introduce her to the teams, to the studios, very proud of that. This is a big moment,” he said.

It's a good news because she knows Couture and world around it, she knows the clients, the lifestyle and at Valentino (they) she has managed to turn the house around and make it successful.

I think she will be clever enough to not replicate what she did at Valentino so i'll wait until September 30.

Dior is in such a bad shape both in terms of brand image and creativity that she could not do worse than what is happening now.

talking candidly with my SA at Dior, she told me that a lot of customers were unhappy about how 'unglamorous' Raf's Dior was. so i guess Maria should know a thing or two about embellished frocks.
 
Don't really know if this is the right place to ask but does someone know what LVMH is planning to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Dior house?

I know they will release an anthology with 7 books for each creative director (https://www.lvmh.com/news-documents/news/exceptional-anthology-to-celebrate-diors-70th-anniversary/) and that an exhibition is opening next week at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (http://www.latimes.com/fashion/la-ig-wwd-paris-museum-expansive-show-dior-70th-anniversary-20170425-story.html)
but I'm scared of what Maria Grazia is going to do, show-wise...
 
Maria Grazia has been the CD for less than a year, how are they going to fill up an entire tome of her work for the house? Will it be the size of a pamphlet?

LOL!!! Exactly. If I was her I'd graciously decline to have a book to cover my very short run, but we both know she's very hungry for these kind of things. Part of the reason we got ambushed by this senseless documentary.

I'm keen to see how it will pan out. John will need a lot of pages to fully cover his tenure, Raf probably not that much.

This should be interesting, especially for Maria. I thought Toledano was a bit lax with her. I always sense that she gets away with much more than Rraf - a documentary at a very early stage of her career, the luxury of a full sale redirection and even sacking one of the most prominent spokespersons.

I wonder how well her direction is selling? Anyone have any info on this?

The moves follow months of speculation following LVMH’s 6.5-billion-euro acquisition of Christian Dior Couture in July, reuniting its fashion and fragrance activities under a single umbrella, and making Dior the second-largest brand in the group’s fashion division, behind Louis Vuitton and ahead of Fendi.

A spokesman for LVMH declined to comment.

Beccari will join Dior from Fendi, which he helped to propel beyond the billion-euro revenue mark by dropping its ubiquitous logo bags in favor of more upscale products, in addition to developing lifestyle destinations like Palazzo Fendi in Rome, comprising a boutique hotel and Zuma restaurant.

I actually don't think that this will have an impact on her work. Now that they are having changes in the actual company, i will say that she will have as much power as John at his prime. Cara Delevigne as the face of the beauty is already a sign of that.

Raf had the opportunity to have the same kind of power if he decided to stay as the strategy of having Dior Parfums in the same umbrella wasn't decided in a short period of time.

This could be an opportunity for Kris Van Assche actually. I really don't think that having Johnny Depp or Pattinson as the face of Dior Homme perfumes make his vision stronger.

As for the sales, it's too early to judge but from what i've heard from the boutiques, it's not doing bad. I know she sold a lot of her t-shirts (the infamous feminist one was sold-out) and some bags but let's be honest, Raf Simons changes in the catalogue of products really helped Dior. His designs (the sunglasses and bags) are still best-sellers at Dior.


I feel sad for Fendi. They had the perfect CEO.
He really gave it all for the brand and his influence really pushed the creative side in a way that Michael Burke hasn't managed to do.

Interesting......thanks Lola! Your theory makes a lot of sense purely because that's the way things work in the corporate world on a daily basis. I imagine things will run much smoothly now since they're both Italian (not that I'm saying she bumped heads with Toledano).

And I'm in absolute agreement re KVA. It's time for him to step up and start expanding. He's running the men's division at Dior. Act it. Firstly, get rid of Johnny and Robert, then push for the unification of the entire men's range (perfumes and mainline, the works). People often wonder why CK was such an advertising powerhouse. It started and ended with coherence.

Dior's couturier Maria Grazia Chiuri, who created the costumes for the “Nuit Blanche” ballet to be held at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome as part of a tribute to American composer Philip Glass, discusses the project with WWD together with chairman and ceo Pietro Beccari.

ROME — The Romans felt it was a special occasion and clusters of curious onlookers gathered near the red carpet rolled out in front of the Teatro dell’Opera in the Italian capital on Thursday evening.

The occasion was the premiere of the “Philip Glass Evening.” This included “Nuit Blanche” with costumes by Dior artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri. The designer was supported by longtime friends Silvia Venturini Fendi and Frida Giannini, as well as Chiara Ferragni — and it was easy to lose count of the selfies the latter was asked to pose for by guests.

Fendi chairman and chief executive officer Serge Brunschwig — previously at DiorHomme — was also in attendance, with Pietro Beccari, Dior’s current chairman and ceo. After the performance, guests gathered for a cocktail event at the workshops where sets for the Teatro dell’Opera are made, dotted with red velvet settees, filled with flowers juxtaposed with statues, paintings, armor and other miscellaneous set props.

And, always a plus in Rome, there was a stunning view over the evening skyline.

The program of three ballets performed by the opera’s dancers and orchestra will run until April 2. The performances kicked off Thursday night with “Hearts & Arrows” with choreography by Benjamin Millepied, followed by “Glass Pieces” with choreography by Jerome Robbins, and “Nuit Blanche,” choreographed by Sébastien Bertaud. For the occasion, étoile Eleonora Abbagnato, director of the ballet corp of the Teatro dell’Opera and an étoile at the Opéra National de Paris, danced with étoile Friedemann Vogel in “Nuit Blanche.”

For “Nuit Blanche,” Chiuri created 16 costumes for the ballet group and the two étoiles. Knits and tulle were layered on bodysuits, with an eye to functionality. Abbagnato’s full skirt was punctuated by silk romantic flowers on two layers of tulle — a floral reference to Dior’s heritage. The two main dancers wore mother-of-pearl, finely iridescent colors, while the other dancers wore powdery hues sheathed in black tulle for visual impact.

This collaboration, said Beccari, “marks a new accomplishment for the house, one that builds on our passion for art in all its forms. Blending fashion and dance is something we owe to Christian Dior himself.”

Beccari recalled how after founding his couture house, Dior designed costumes for “Treize Danses,” a Roland Petit ballet staged at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. The couturier developed close relationships with a number of dancers, and he was inspired by the avant-garde Swedish Ballet and the Ballets Russes.

“This new project being held in Rome likewise pushes boundaries and re-creates an extraordinary dialogue between the arts, the stage and fashion,” said Beccari. “Dance, music, haute couture and the skills they entail merge in a virtuous and virtuoso alchemy. Creating costumes for this tribute ballet to Philip Glass represents both a continuation of and reinvention of our heritage in the most wonderful way.”

Beccari said Dior expects to further foster such projects, ticking off existing collaborations with artists across creative sectors, from design to contemporary art, painting to sculpture, music and dance. For example, the reinterpretation of the Lady Dior bag through initiatives such as “Dior Lady Art” revealed last October, for which Chiuri tapped 11 female artists to customize the Lady Dior handbag, or the collaboration with choreographer Sharon Eyal, with the female circus company Mimbre, for Dior’s ready-to-wear spring 2019 show in September.

Since joining Dior last year as men’s artistic director, Kim Jones has collaborated with several contemporary artists such as Kaws, Hajime Sorayama and Raymond Pettibon.

“Visual arts and performing arts continue to cross over more than ever, enriching the Dior spirit,” mused Beccari. “Not just in a poetic way but also with an eminently political modernity, through engaged, feminist works.”

Asked if costume design could be an additional outlet for Dior, Beccari said that “to associate the Dior name with artistic projects of this scale makes total sense and reflects our passions, in the plural, now and forever.” He noted that Chiuri has designed two collections inspired by the magic of the circus and dance. “Loïe Fuller and Pina Bausch, Bernard Buffet and Gérard Vicaire, the costume designer who also headed a real couture house, are all part of the collective imagination that has marked the history of culture as well as that of haute couture,” said Beccari. “Costume has deep links with fashion; the parade and the stage have several points in common with the podium and the catwalk. These connections are expressed very intensely, with great intelligence, through Maria Grazia Chiuri’s creative world. For Dior, reinventing oneself and being open to the world, and making people dream through the magic of the arts, remains a perpetual quest.

Here, Chiuri discusses the project with WWD.

WWD: What were the main challenges in designing the costumes for “Nuit Blanche?” And what was the greatest pleasure?

Maria Grazia Chiuri: I love being involved in projects like these, where different forms of creativity come together. It’s an important juxtaposition that helps me grow as a designer. It’s also a challenge where you have to respond to different needs and other aspects of a fashion project. I consider my work for “Nuit Blanche” as a “choreography exercise” that takes into account the complexity of the discipline to create costumes that are in sync with movement and express the essence of the project as a whole. Don’t forget that the House of Dior and dance go way back. Personally, I’ve experimented with it in different projects, like the last 2019 ready-to-wear spring/summer collection, where the reference was to modern dance (Isadora Duncan, Loïe Fuller). In this case, since it’s about classical dance, I sought inspiration from an iconic Dior piece, the Miss Dior dress, an extraordinary piece of clothing that so reminds me of the flowering gardens of Rome. I interpreted it this time in a light and personal way.

WWD: What was it like to work with the ateliers of the Opera of Rome? Was this your first time designing for a ballet?

M.G.C.: I had already worked with the Rome Opera when I was creative co-director of Valentino, designing costumes for “La Traviata” directed by Sofia Coppola. I have to say that the workers in their atelier were and are extraordinary, and ready to find solutions for every idea and proposal, even the most daring ones. I love working with dance; it’s an art form that is very dear to me. I love it in all its forms, and it never fails to move me. Dance pulls at my deepest heartstrings. My goal was to design costumes that complemented the choreography and flow perfectly with the movement of the dance, contributing to the magic that happens on stage.

WWD: Did Eleonora Abbagnato also have some input into the designs?

M.G.C.: Eleonora was fundamental to helping me really get into the project, and to helping me understand the story she wanted to tell through movement and dance. Together we thought about forms, fabrics and colors that would best bring out the cinematic aspect of the performance. The technical and artistic know-how of the people at the Rome Opera then helped turn them into costumes.

WWD: Could you share a comment on Philip Glass and his music? How were you inspired by his music for your designs?

M.G.C.: Philip Glass is an extraordinary artist. His artistic expression spans different media, from theater to cinema. I think that’s just the right tribute to versatile and tremendous talent. It was while listening to his music that I tried to imagine what flavor I wanted to give the costumes for the ballet. I wanted to create a direct link between these two nonverbal languages that are fashion and music, so that they come together to complete the overall communicative and emotional expression of dance. Remember Philip Glass began experimenting with minimalistic music in Rome in the 1970s. It’s also this link with my city that makes me so honored to take part in this exceptional musical project.

WWD: We know that ballet is a passion of yours, but what are your favorite pieces? And what kind of music do you enjoy?

M.G.C.: I love the expressive power of ballet, from the great classics to contemporary experimental pieces that seek to convey a message that goes beyond a narrative, taking on a wider range of themes, and transcending space and time to speak of universal values. As far as my musical tastes go, I’m an omnivore and happily contradict myself! I listen to everything from classical music to rap and try not to let anything escape my ear, because music is the voice of the present. I really think music is a fundamental part of life. It provides the soundtrack to different times in our lives and helps us better grasp our emotions.

WWD: For the Dior show in September, you quoted Pina Bausch and Sharon Eyal and you worked with the latter — strong women you put at the forefront when designing your collections. You also include Eleonora Abbagnato, I see, with whom you share similar career steps. Was she a draw to this project?

M.G.C.: Eleonora is the heart and soul of this project, the person who wanted it in the first place and gave thought to every single aspect of it. I’ve admired her for years now: her drive, her spirit of sacrifice. Eleonora is an extraordinary artist who never stops and works very hard to reach her goals. But she also managed to make time for her personal life. She is a huge source of inspiration for women of the next generation. Her career, like mine, straddles France and Italy. That brought us together, and it’s been a wonderful experience working with her. Moreover, the idea of Sébastien Bertaud, a young French choreographer from the Paris Opera, was to bring Paris and Rome together. That’s why he came to me, because I’m Roman and I work for an iconic French brand, and Eleonora, who is Italian and who’s worked in Paris for many years, and considers France a fundamental part of her experience.

WWD: What do you think of costume designing? Is it something that you would consider further developing?

M.G.C.: Costume design is a very precise discipline with rules of its own that requires close study and attention. It also requires a great capacity to understand why each figure is on stage. I love working on projects that bring talented professionals together, and I hope to have more opportunities to take on challenges like this one, that are as complex as they are beautiful.

As expected, Dior's official instagram is fully plugging MGC's ballet project. The craftsmanship of the costumes is exceptional and I think the overall look is really beautiful. While I have found the floaty ballet /princess silhouette that MGC has repeatedly sent down the runway quite tiresome and unoriginal, as costumes for the ballet it fits right in.

The material used for the dresses are delicate but functional, and the level of skill demanded to create these pieces ensures the costumes won't fall apart - all necessary factors to consider when you're on stage performing something as demanding as ballet.

The only thing I wish that hadn't been included in the design were the Christian Dior-emblazoned straps on the dresses and underwear, which can be clearly seen through the sheer material and the men's tricots/tights. For me the costumes are meant to contribute to enhancing the mood of the ballet, not be the main star. The lack of subtlety makes me feel like she's afraid no one would recognise her work unless she branded it everywhere.

Not a fan of her work either, but this collection is certainly better than whatever she's doing at Dior right now. I don't find it that surprising myself because I recall Olivier also did a pretty decent job 2 years ago when Balmain was tasked with putting a collection together for the Paris Opera Ballet.

However, the collaboration felt more like MGC just looking for another avenue to assert her tenure. So in short, a marketing effort. It's really more about her trademark elements than the subject matter - the use of sheer material, embroidery motifs, the CD logo straps, the ruched detailing. All very pleasing on the eye within this setting, and you can tell it was above all else functional which is a major plus, what is it saying about Glass? MGC is a very literal designer, so I can run a book that if she interpreted any of his movements in this collection, we'd have spotted it miles away.
