Most Overpriced Designer? #1

I think another important factor is just how relative "worth" and "quality" to different people; to me, Anthropologie is expensive. Is it worth it though? Given the fact that it'll be worn numerous times, yes. Same with Sperry Top-Siders; $80 is a lot for a pair of shoes to me, but I'll wear them to the point where they basically average out to a few cents per wear.

I have a hard time believing that, regardless of how "quality" it is, a Proenza Schouler evening dress that cost $2,000 is going to average out well.

it's so true. it's ALL relative. for someone who lives in a big city, with a decent job, going out to dinner every night, and out to bars -- or even the beach/country -- every weekend, $2,000 isn't really all that much money. and it's a small price to pay for a little bit of luxury for some people.

now, $20,000? that's a lot of money pretty much anywhere you go....:innocent:

Why do labels seem so important? Admittedly, most people tend to value designer garments more, but it's rather silly. Quality considerations aside, labels are just tiny pieces of cloth, costing only a few cents (and yes, I've actually seen sew-on Marc Jacobs labels for sale :ninja:), all their hype is just inside our heads. I mean, yes, some brands have better quality and are more aesthetically tasteful, but sometimes we just go too far.

What about Balmain, anyone? Can we question the price of a 2000$ pair of jeans, what can you add to a jean to make it up to 2000$.

Or $1500 For A Plain Grey Tee

I totally agree.

However, with brands like Balmain, where the cost is incredibly high yet only reflect some of the pieces, it's mainly brand image too.

For example, the most expensive pieces often have large amounts of hand-embroidery and all use Swarovski crystals (not incredibly expensive either i know), as well as high quality fabrics. If you've ever seen a Balmain piece in the flesh, they are really well made and definitely a piece of high quality fashion (although many would still say that they are still overpriced).

Then compare that their slightly cheaper, simpler items. Obviously, even with the jewels and embroidery, a tank top can never be worth £1000 upwards, but when you're selling jackets for £5000 and dresses for £15,000 (nearly couture prices!), why would you sell a tank top for a normal price? It just doesn't fit into the brand image. Not only that, when you're expecting people to pay thousands for the bigger pieces, the smaller pieces are reasonably priced in comparison (although still overpriced).

It's the same with almost all high-end brands, but Balmain is especially expensive.

The idea of clothing being overpriced is totally relative and it only really arises when something costs much more than people would want to pay or much more than they think something is worth.

I was planning on writing a short reply but I guess I had a lot to say :innocent:

Balmain,Chanel,Dolce & Gabbana and etc...But Balmain keeps the first place...It`s just ridiculous!!!

I think of it as people buying membership into a special club... like a country club. But instead of tennis and golf it's handbags and silk scarves. You can clearly get the same for cheaper, but then EVERYONE would do it too. People like the illusion of exclusivity.

To me it's Chloe. I've been lucky enough to get some of it via Ebay and everytime I look the original prize up I'm like wtf?!? It's so not worth it at all.

andy warhol is the most overpriced label. i mean, it's just paint and canvas.

Re the $2000 Balmain jeans ... I think the illusion of a backside for those who have none would be an appropriate GWP ...

Well when i become a designer and famous and all the rest and people will pay 5k for my tank top then, im one happy designer!

But yes, if you have seen the haute couture club documentary women go gaga over it, and they have the money too..

1) Fashion isn't art.
2) Warhol IS "overpriced" right now due to trends at auction houses and the entry of third world Billionaires who want a "name-brand".
3) Intangibles are of course part of the price of a garment.

Ooo i forgot the awful Hermes

Considering it mainly uses in-house construction that beats pretty much all other "designer" items, has first pic when buying leathers and offers terrifically iconic bags invested with tremendous significance I'm not sure I'd say that. The physical object and emotional payoff is off the chart.

When I worked at Louise Goldin I was really surprised at how much of the clothes were actually hand sewn, it's a lot of work. Not to mention some of the fabric was £200 a metre! And this is only Louise Goldin.
It's really difficult to make something seem effortless, a lot of time would have been spent over that garment.
If it is highly priced then a lot of time must have gone into it.

in that case you would be getting your money worth. i guess overpriced could be viewed in a few different ways.

what about alaia? I love alaia, but everything is so darn expensive!!
