Big Shows that Big Models Haven't Walked In

LIU WEN

Age: 31
Runway Debut: Burberry F/W 2008
Experience Level: 12 years industry veteran
Status: Active and on standby
Title: China's runway icon
Ability: Fit wide range of brands, mood maker, and versatile AF
Signiture Walk: The silent ankle twister (the current subdue version, the jolly dimples version and the retired, ferocious arms sway - her rather fierce mode)

Record: Still the undisputed Asian model to walk the most shows in a single run of the four capitals with over 70 appearances

Facts to Know:

Never have she missed a RTW season yet; F/W 2019 is her 23rd round consecutively

Asked her first opening/closing a major show: it was Givenchy while walking the first time

After 4 years of absence, she made her couture return at Schiaparelli S/S 2018 and only

Even though it originally didn't started with her, she was still undeniably the face behind the movement for more Asian representation across fashion shows

Most celebrated Chinese runway model from high end to Victoria's Secret

She's runway royalty for her consistency and longevity given her on-going performances

In an interview, Liu said she enjoys walking shows and have yet to fall down

< BRANDS YET TO WALK FOR >

!!! For some models, their status/stardom may have prevented them from walking certain shows... or, from their point of view, it's not necessary to walk now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

----- shows that can now be crossed off -----

Sacai - walked FW19 RTW
Valentino - walked SS19 RTW & spring couture 2019 back-to-back
Versace - walked pre-fall 2019, men's FW19 & FW19 RTW back-to-back-and-back

----- shows where she could've walk during her heyday -----

Acne Studios
Diesel Black Gold (what happened, more runway in the future?)
Giorgio Armani
Jil Sander
Mulberry (will they go back to runway?)
Philosophy

----- shows after her peak, as brands became covetable -----

Coach
J.W. Anderson
Longchamp (new to the game, a must show to walk now)
Simone Rocha (considered big for LFW & the top girls are there)

----- relatively not so important, though could've walked -----

Emporio Armani
Iceberg
Versus (inconsistent, any runway shows?, walked big sister's however)

----- not going to happen -----

Christian Lacroix

Notable Highlights:

After a decade, is one of two 'TOP MODELS' from the '00s to walk F/W 2019 with a contested showlist in terms of quality (12) and quantity (15) that could match the current girls of the moment - an unexpected outcome coming from her generation, her best shows in four years

Rank #1 Top Walker with 74 shows (F/W 2009) - tied with Yulia K.

During her prime, she has walked under all the top casting director's shows (including Marsh); fast forward today F/W 2019 saw her walking the top four CD's shows accounting all 13 of her 15 shows

Rank #2 Top Walker with 70 shows (S/S 2010) - after Constance J.

By now Mariacarla has walked Dries Van Noten and Tom Ford. She also did Nina Ricci back in 2000. I don't think she has ever done Schiaparelli and Isabel Marant.

Tanya Dziahileva and Vlada Roslyakova never walked Balmain and Isabel Marant while they were doing major shows.

Naomi Campbell walked for Balenciaga last night is it her first ? I can't recall she did it in the past

Off the top of my head, Gigi has now done Hugo Boss, Proenza Schouler, and Valentino. She has also done an Alexander Wang lookbook but I don't think that counts.

Gigi has walked for Chloé F/W 2020 and Altuzarra this season as well.

Runway Analysis – Her Story

After five years away from the catwalk Lina made a brief appearance at Akris and Balenciaga S/S 2019. Next season would mark her official “comeback” picking up 19 shows in total with an exclusive at Proenza and a couple opening slots. Following the newfound success F/W 2020 would see even greater results walking over 30 shows.

Like her counterparts (Blomqvist, Gruner and Mullen) Lina is one of several models of mature age and experience vying shows. With her refreshing, angular face casting hasn’t been particularly harsh for her. Winning over top casting directors and appearing at lesser-known shows. She fits seamlessly with either crop of girls.

Not only is Lina having one of the finest and viable comeback for a Chinese/Asian model, but for any model. Period. Especially a history like hers. The trajectory that ensues after her glorious runway return indeed translated to bigger, better, and brighter things (mainly campaigns). Her resume is utter proof. Huge congratulations.

Take a closer look and notice how Lina checked off a lot of shows while only walking once given her rather short runway career. But her resurgence saw her walking certain brands consistently and even past shows that were loyal to her. After all, she knows how to walk.

If it weren’t for the pandemic, it’s highly tenable that Lina would continue to walk more shows come the seasons. Fendi, Gucci and Prada support this and glad it was her “decision to be back on the stage that I love.”

Not sure if anyone keeps up with these anymore but Kendall just walked for Prada so that can be taken off her list

Some new changes to Cong’s runway.

Since they aren’t focusing on checking off the bigger shows on her list, thought it’d be nice to include smaller/new shows she walked the first time.

And congrats on her 30th Chanel show this season!
