Your Travel Bag Recommendations...

So with my new job, I'm going to travel a lot, and I want to buy a nice travel bag. I only own a Prada backpack, but it's too small.

I've been looking for duffle/gym types of bags, but all the 'mainstream' luxury brands are such a bore – Gucci, LV, ... Is Coach still a thing? I want something classy, but I don't want to be a cliché.

maybe you could consider this newly resurrected french bag brand - Au Départ Paris. They're actually older than LV but went defunct until recently(?). i discovered it whilst casually shopping in a bongenie store in geneva last month and their items had this cool-ish, niche factor but nicely made and considered. Their pattern is like those classic trunk patterned monogram types.

i'm kinda kicking myself now for not buying it but it was full price so i hesitated...i was looking at this large carry-all. there seem to be pieces on sale online though.

It appealed to me since i was kind of in ur boat - i was def not going to buy LV or something, i wanted something like valextra or goyard or something but even goyard is kind of becoming over-exposed these days

Thank you for reminding me of Au Départ! I actually like them, but their site is down now... Goyard to me is a synonym of a basic football player, so it's a hard pass.

On another note, how come Valextra is charging the same as Hermès for a bag?

I remember reading an article a while back about how Valextra was aiming for that low-key luxury bag brand alongside bottega but that was before Daniel's era with price-hikes. Even so, I only recall people buying the carry-all.

Maybe Celine? I'd actually think Celine's bag prices have been one of the most reasonable of late among the mainstream labels, everyone else is kind of crazy.

I have an au depart bag and some small accessories, although the monogram is nice, and I also mostly bought it because how most doesn't own it, the jacquard fabric doesnt hold up, and i don't think it can withstand long, rough usage. Maybe the leather ones are better? I did see a leather backpack that looks great...

That said, I find the worksmanship not able to match up with Goyard, which to date remains my favorite, but again to not have the exact same thing as everyone else, get a different color, or design, so it will look 'unique' to you...

I've had them all from LV to smaller brands, and nothing beats my The North Face Duffle Base Camp bag. I love it so much I ended up buying it in two different sizes (S and M), both in black. I personally find it cooler than toting around a designer bag. Contrary to most of its "luxury" counterparts, it's actually well-designed for travel, with multiple pockets, and can carry so much even in the smaller versions. I take it everywhere with me, from plane to train to road trips, and it never ceases to impress me. Hope it helps!

honestly I'd say if you're looking for a travel bag, as in something to take on the plane as luggage, you'd be better served by a brand that actually specialises in luggage e.g. Tumi as mentioned above. They're not traditional 'luxury' but the bags and cases are very well made and well organised (lots of compartments and pockets etc).

I bought a Filson rucksack several years ago, when they were still made in the US. They're great quality but I've heard they've risen prices and lowered quality control. I would only buy if you can examine them in person. They requiere minimal maintenance, but its always good to condition the leather straps at least.

I have been traveling with 1 carry on (one bag) for the last 8 years or so, and my bag is looking a little worn on some areas so I've been looking to replace it. Honestly, each of us have different requirements but for me, I want to have several carrying options (shoulder strap, hand strap, backpack), no wheels (dead weight and pretty useless once you leave the airport) and soft rather than a hard shell (again, weight). I'm almost decided on a Porter 3-way duffel. As mainstream (and pricey) as the brand can be in Japan, the bags, specially luggage, are very well made and designed for longevity (not trendy or gimmicky) .
