Men's Footwear

I have so many shoes now. And can't stop. Just ordered some royal blue suede creepers from asos.

Same here... I came to a point that I bought 3 pairs of shoes last month! Hence my post here...

Men's shoes: The long and short of it

A colleague's preference for pointy shoes threatens to push our sensitive style writer over the fashion edge.

Ugly: square toed, elongated, superfluous stitching, possibly made from lino.

I'm on the verge of a fashion intervention. Not on the receiving end of one, this time, before you ask. I'm literally this close to actually instigating one.

Here's the situation. There's a man who regularly pops into the Telegraph office for meetings. He's a nice guy - friendly. And you can tell that he puts an effort into the way that he looks. His suit is sharp and he obviously spends a lot of time frisking his hair up into spikes.
When I see him, I smile. When I see his shoes, I want to cry. I want to shake him. I want to slap him repeatedly in the face like they do in disaster films when the hero (me, obvs) can't get through to someone in a moment of crisis. I need to get his attention, to make him snap out of it, to save him from himself.
I want to say, "Jim" (not his real name, it's actually Paul), "you're a nice guy. Almost everybody in the office likes you. Sure, you have that excessive perspiration problem. But we all pretend not to notice it and only laugh about it AFTER you've left. It's the shoes, man. You've got a problem. We want to help you."

Jim likes pointy shoes and elongated square-toed shoes. Some of his shoes are made from what I suspect is lino pretending to be leather. Others have shiny buckles, or worse, two shiny buckles. Last week was the final straw: a freakishly long pair of shoes that looked as though they were hewn from mahogany given a high gloss varnish.
He may as well have been wearing clown shoes. "Jim," I wanted to say, "you look like a clown".
The truth is, there are a lot of misguided Jims around. And often their pointy, elongated, overdone shoes are accompanied by snazzy jeans - pre-distressed, or even worse, boot-legged. Jims often have snazzy hair too - spiked like Beckham had 10 years ago, possibly with blonde tips. A friend of mine refers to these men as Manchester hairdressers, but that is cruel. This is no time for name calling.
What these lads are crying out for is a quiet word from a friend. Jims need someone to give them some very basic rules when it comes to footwear. I want to whisper the following into the collective ears of the well-meaning Jims of this land:

- Don't buy shoes whose sole aim (get it?) is to create the illusion that your feet are of an unnatural length.
- Square-toed shoes are revolting. Cease and desist.
- Stay away from shoes that have been 'jazzed-up' with a detail (multiple buckles, superfluous stitching, faux pre-worn etc)
- Steer clear of shiny or patent leather unless you're attending a formal event.
- Black shoes with light to mid-colour denim is creepy and should be avoided.
- It's good to match your belt to your shoes, but something of a similar shade is fine. Black shoes and brown belt is a no-no.
- Avoid any shoe that you might describe as 'trendy'. They aren't. And chances are that you aren't either if that's how you'd describe them.
- Instead, invest in a good pair of classics: brogues, desert boots and loafers. They're a classic because they work.

Softgrey.. great article! Believe it or not there are so many guys out there who still dress up in those shoes and jeans like described. It is a horrific view honestly!

Well, I bought these Repetto desert boots few months ago, and finally got to wear them on the streets

I've decided I really like this shoes from Kurt Geiger, but I'm having a hard time choosing between the red or the blue. I'd never wear that kind of shoe often enough to ever justify getting myself both.

Thoughts anyone...?

the blue would appear to be easier to wear but I like the red for the upcoming fall months. If I had to choose, for me it would be the red no doubt.

honeycombchild, I would pick the red ones....
