Fur in your wardrobe (posting requires reading thread guidelines)

Ermine is (I think) often more used for trims. A full coat I believe would go for abour $30,000!!! (see below)

Ermine

"Once the fur of European royalty, Russian summer ermine (golden color) and winter ermine (white, sometimes with the tell-tale black tail tips) are rare and expensive, costing between $30,000 and $60,000."

Wow  i LOVE the Vuitton pic (although I've always thought I would never pronounce "love" and "Vuitton" in the same sentence)

That's fantastic. No matter I'm a boy or whatever, I want a winter's Ermine scarf (my aristocratic roots are coming out  )

I'll marry whoever tell me which brand produce those scarves. i've checked my local furrier (sp?) and they says they were unable to order those furs (they have fantastic mink and chinchillas though, but chinchilla is far too feminine for me). I'll check Révillon this summer bt I'm afraid of the USD 30 000  tell me a scarf does need only two or three Ermine, whereas a coat... uses wayyy more furs.

Anyway thanks a lot :flower:

Ultra - l like this one.............(I'd prefer it in all black rather than tarten tho)

ok, i´ve been learning a bit more, the problem with fur is that if not stored well it starts to loose its natural oil and ends up drying..., i´m not sure yet if something can be done in such extreme cases but i found a place that takes care about fur and its storage:

here are some tips from that same source:

Everyday & At-Home Fur Care Tips
Fur Needs to Breathe... No Plastic Bags
Never store your fur in a plastic bag where air cannot circulate. Furs like to breathe. Plastic prevents air from circulating and can dry out the leather when traveling, store your fur in a cloth garment bag provided by your furrier.
Never Use Cleaning Materials on a Fur
Never use sprays or cleaning fluids on your fur. Have them professionally cleaned each year to insure many years of enjoyment.
Avoid Wear & Rub Patterns Try not to rub the fur with handbags or packages as it can cause wear spots. It?s best to have your fur cared for each season by the professionals at Without A Trace.
How to Hang a Fur
Always hang your fur on a broad-shouldered hanger never on a wire hanger Give your fur enough room in the closet so the fur is not crushed. Avoid leaving a fur hanging in a bright place. The light can cause the fur to oxidize or change color.
Wet Furs
If your fur gets wet, shake it out and hang it to dry in a well-ventilated room. Keep it away from direct heater or radiator, which can cause both fur and leaf her to dry out. After it is dry, shake it again. Most furs will take some rain and snow far better than wool or ether winter coat will. If the fur is soaked through, however take it immediately to your fur retailer for proper treatment. Never comb or brush the fur.
Avoid Pins & Jewelry
Never pin jewelry on your fur.
Do Not Mothproof
Never attempt to mothproof a fur yourself. Home treatments are no substitute for professional cleaning and storage. Avoid spraying perfume or hairspray onto your fur. Annual Cleaning & Storage
Your furrier is equipped with temperature, humidity and light controlled storage facilities to protect fur. Have fur cleaned annually by a fur specialist, definitely not dry cleaner.

here are more information abot fur storage:

It's fairly likely we're not getting anymore snow this year and so you need to think about where you're going to store your fur. And you'll need to do this in the next few weeks before it gets hot so you preserve your investment and so your coat has the same sheen and suppleness next year as it did this season.
And while it's tempting to think about stuffing your coat in a cedar closet in the basement wrapped in plastic - that is absolutely the WORST thing you can do. Furs need to breath and will suffocate in a plastic bag. Cedar closets and moth balls will not preserve your coat from heat and also you may never get the smell out! Professional fur storage facilities baby your fur coats by keeping them stored in a roomy, temperature controlled environment that are also light and humidity controlled.
What can happen otherwise is that the more often your coat is exposed to humidity, it loses natural oils that keep the fur supple. Think about fur coats you find in vintage shops that are stiff, shedding and uncomfortable to wear, that's what can happen to your fur if you don't store it properly every summer.
Some dry cleaners offer a storage service but your best bet is to ship your coat to a professional fur storage. Many pick up and will deliver but Fed Ex and UPS can provide boxes to ship your coats. Here are a few reputable fur cleaning and storage places worth calling.

Holly Madison's Fur

I am so in love with Holly Madison's fur jacket. Its super cute. It made me want one too. Fur can be worn by a young sophisticated woman too!

Fur storage

Hi everybody,

I have a wool coat with only a little bit of fur lining the hood. I was wondering what you guys suggest I do in terms of the summer months ahead. Does it need to be stored and cleaned like full fur jackets or can I just leave it in a cool dry dark place.

Thanks in advance.

WOW THAT IS A DEAL!!! Post pictures you paid $150 for a Full Length coat??? or just jacket either way its a deal post pictures!

Probably not to be honest. Just keep it in a well aired wardrobe. Keeping it cooler is better but if it is just trim then I wouldn't really be too concerned.

$150 does seem a good price (she says with teeth gritted through jealousy - lol)

Hi everyone, just a few days ago, I bought a vintage tweed jacket with 100% racoon trim around the collar. Would it be a bad idea to wear the jacket during warmer weather, like around 60 degrees? Or would it damage the fur. The jacket itself is actually very thin.

Fur looks best on the nonhuman animal, not the human animal. Why must the nonhuman animal live in an 'eternal treblinka'?

I think unleast you expose the fur to constant heat (which dryes up the leather side of fur), the external temperature would not damage it, it is the elongated overexposure to warm temperature that dryes the natural oil of the fur (like when someone keeps it in a closet that gets a daily ray of sun through the window, or when people covered them with a plastic bag, that doesn´t allow fur to breathe), so as long as you feel comfortable in it, enjoy it, and remember to store it in a dry, cold place, covered with a natural fiber (like cotton) dust bag.

Theres also some tips from this site:

Properly Storing Your Fur
Professional storage during the summer months is the most important in maximizing the longevity of your fur. Home storage, using air conditioning or a cedar closet, will not protect your fur from drying out or from dust, dirt or insect damage. Fur vaults are specifically designed to protect the lasting quality of your fur, offering temperature-, humidity-, and light-controlled environments. Homes are not equipped to provide these combined conditions. When fur is not stored in a vault, the hair itself may appear fine, but the oils of the leather may dry out. If the leather dries, rips and tears will begin to appear and these cannot be repaired adequately, nor can the oils be replaced. Annual fur storage is a necessary and inexpensive way to maintain the quality of your fur.
Cleaning and Glazing Your Fur
Furs should be cleaned once a year. They may not look dirty, but they need conditioning in order to keep them soft and fresh. Cleaning and glazing is a dry process. It cannot damage your fur, rather it enhances it. It will not shrink, discolor, or change the shape of your fur. When a fur is cleaned and glazed by an expert furrier, it will be softer and shinier, providing you with many years of fashionable wear.
Tips to Help Protect Your Fur
  1. Always hang your fur on a broad-shouldered hanger, never on a wire hanger. Give your fur enough room in the closet so the fur is not crushed.
  2. Never hang your fur in a plastic bag or rubber-lined bag. Plastic prevents air from circulating and can dry out the leather. When traveling, store your fur in a cloth garment bag provided by your furrier.
  3. If your fur gets wet, shake it out and hang it to dry in a well-ventilated room. Keep it away from direct heat or a radiator, which can cause both fur and leather to dry out. After it is dry, shake it again. Most furs will take some rain and snow far better than a wool or winter coat will. If the fur is soaked through, however, take it immediately to your fur retailer for proper treatment. Never comb or brush the fur.
  4. Never pin jewelry on your fur. Do not use shoulder straps of a hangbag on a consistent basis.
  5. Never attempt to mothproof your fur yourself. Home treatments are no substitute for professional cleaning and storage.
  6. Avoid spraying perfume or hairspray onto your fur.
  7. Always store your fur during warm weather with your furrier - never at a dry cleaner. Your furrier is equipped with temperature, humidity and light-controlled storage facilities to protect fur.
  8. Have fur cleaned annually by a fur specialist, definitely not a dry cleaner.
  9. Have small rips or tears repaired immediately by your furrier. This will prevent more expensive repairs later.
  10. Avoid leaving a fur hanging in a bright place. The light can cause the fur to oxidize or change color.

I love fur and i refuse to wear fur if it is fake. I know the implications of this and i have seen enough footage of how it gets to me, and yet i still wear it because i love it too much. Its luxurious and screams expensive! I have a fur trimmed three quarter length coat and a fur jacket almost exactly the same as Kate Moss' one here and i only paid £14 pound for it which is great considering it is about 35 years old! I will never stop wearing fur - i like it too much!
